Bit of Intelligence How Tos
<< Back to Bit of Intelligence Cards
What is a "Bit of Intelligence" card? A Bit of Intelligence card represents one bit of information. It is made using an accurate drawing or a high-quality photograph that is large and clear. Bit of Intelligence cards are organized into categories, which allows a child to generalize about each category and relate one category to another.
How to Use "Bit of Intelligence" cards
Position yourself and your child comfortably facing each other. Hold the cards about 18" away from your child.
Begin by announcing joyously, "I have some insects to show you! " Then as quickly as your fingers will allow, move the back card in the stack to the front and say, "little black ant, " "housefly, " "giant walkingstick. "
By taking the back card and moving it to the front you get a quick look at the name on the back of the card you are about to present. Then as you put that card out front you tell your child its name.
Zoom through the ten cards with great enthusiasm and as quickly as possible. This should take 10-15 seconds.
Space out your teaching sessions so that you are doing many brief sessions during the day. Children learn quickly and easily, so make sure to keep your sessions very brief, zippy, highly organized, and enthusiastic.
How to Teach Programs of Intelligence (facts on the back)
One session should consist of no more than five programs. Programs take longer to read aloud than Bit of Intelligence cards and in order to keep sessions brief you need to do fewer of them in each session.
As you show each card, read one fact about each. For example, when teaching about insects, tell you child all of the same numbered facts, such as #2, which states what each insect eats. This should take about 10-15 seconds.
Remember that all teaching sessions should be fast and fun.
